Antique Pine Furniture Guide: How to Tell if a Piece is Truly Victorian.

The popularity of antique pine furniture has grown enormously over the past few decades. Its warm colour, natural character and traditional construction make it a favourite in many homes.
However, that popularity has also led to a huge number of modern reproduction pieces being sold as antique. To the untrained eye they can look very similar.
Fortunately, there are several clear signs that can help you identify whether a piece of pine furniture is genuinely antique.
Look at the Drawer Construction
One of the easiest ways to identify genuine Victorian pine furniture is by examining the drawer joints.
Antique pieces usually feature hand-cut dovetail joints. These were made individually by craftsmen, which means they often appear slightly uneven or irregular.
Typical signs include:
uneven spacing between dovetails
slightly irregular shapes
hand-finished joints
Modern reproduction furniture is usually made using machines, which produce perfectly uniform joints that look almost identical on every drawer.
Check the Screws
Screws can also give a good indication of the age of a piece.
Victorian furniture generally contains traditional slotted screws, often with slightly
irregular heads and signs of age or wear.
Modern reproduction furniture frequently uses Phillips or Pozidriv screws, which are a clear sign the piece was made much more recently.
Look for Natural Age and Patina
Real antique pine develops a distinctive patina over many decades.
This natural ageing process often results in:
gentle wear on edges and corners
subtle colour variation in the timber
small marks and imperfections from years of use
Modern pine furniture often looks too perfect and uniform, lacking the depth of character that genuine antique pieces develop over time.
Woodworm: Old vs Active
Woodworm is very common in antique pine furniture.
In most cases, the holes you see are historic and completely inactive, caused many years ago.
Signs of old woodworm include:
clean, dry holes
no fresh dust around the holes
no evidence of new activity
At Antique Pine Imports, all furniture is carefully inspected to ensure there is no active infestation before it is offered for sale.
Original Handles and Hardware
Original handles, escutcheons and hinges can also help confirm the age of a piece.
Many genuine Victorian pine pieces still retain:
original brass handles
traditional key escutcheons
historic hinges and fittings
Reproduction furniture often uses modern hardware designed to look aged, but the materials and finish rarely have the same authenticity.
Why Buying from a Specialist Matters
Because antique pine furniture has become so popular, many modern pieces are sometimes described as antique when they are actually much newer.
Buying from a specialist dealer helps ensure that what you are purchasing is genuinely antique and properly restored.
